Just after 7:00 AM on Wednesday, March 18th, the Salt Lake region experienced a magnitude 5.7 earthquake with an epicenter near the city of Magna. This was the largest earthquake in the Salt Lake region in over 50 years. Alta residents and locals reported feeling moderate to strong shaking in Alta, but the town has not heard reports of injuries or of damage to structures or critical infrastructure.
Alta property owners should inspect structures for cracks in foundations, walls, ceilings, and roofs; inspect doors and windows to ensure proper opening, closing, and latching; and inspect utilities including water lines and gas lines. Document any damage, and contact the town with questions.
