Statement from Mayor Sondak on February 16th 2019 Structure Fire

February 17, 2019

Yesterday afternoon a fire broke out in several units of the Village at Sugarplum. I am glad to say that no one was injured. Our sympathies are with those who lost property and who suffered the trauma of the fire.

Power and gas have been restored to all units except those directly affected. The bypass road is open, though the lower Sugarplum road is currently closed.

With the cold and the amount of snow in Alta, firefighting and other aspects of public safety were a challenge. I was engaged from the beginning and I was briefly on scene till about midnight.

The specific cause of the fire is yet to be determined and the Town and other agencies will be considering what if any changes this incident suggests we make to our policies and procedures.

I am very grateful for and proud of the skill, professionalism, compassion, and good humor of all who were involved in responding to this emergency.

–Harris Sondak, Mayor
